Mt Laurel Library to Host a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

Are you ready to watch the Great American Solar Eclipse? On Monday, August 21st, many parts of the country will witness a phenomenon not seen in a century, a total solar eclipse. While Birmingham is not in the path of totality, this area is fortunately in line for a partial solar eclipse. According to NASA, the moon will obscure 92% of the sun here.

The Mt Laurel Library is celebrating this historic event by hosting a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at the Library and Olmsted Park. Starting at 12:30 p.m., the Library staff will go over safety measures on how to view the eclipse. Proper eclipse viewing glasses are a must, as looking at the sun without protection can permanently damage your eyes. Read more about safe eclipse viewing practices here.

“We have partnered with NASA at the Space Science Institute and we’re really excited to be able to provide this to the community,” said Kate Etheredge with the Mt Laurel Library. The Library is home to many events for all ages throughout the year, but this one is proving to be exceptionally popular. They have run out of reservations for solar eclipse viewing glasses.

Though all of the glasses are reserved, everyone is welcome to come to the Solar Eclipse Viewing Party. Come to Olmsted Park with your eclipse glasses and lawn chairs and watch the solar event with your neighbors! The eclipse will be at peak visibility at 1:32 p.m.

In case of inclement weather or for those that do not have eye protection, the librarians will air NASA’s live feed of the eclipse in the library’s meeting room. The library also has crafts for kids, including instructions for making a pinhole projector and a National Park Service activity book that kids can complete and mail in to receive a Jr. Eclipse Ranger Badge.
