Kay Green Design Brings Signature Style to Mt Laurel
Kay Green Design, an award-winning interior design firm based in Orlando, Fla., brings her signature style to Mt Laurel’s new model home, Cherry Laurel, the latest home plan offered in the master-planned Birmingham community.
The 5-bedroom and 5½-bath model home highlights many of the custom options available to buyers who purchase the Cherry Laurel—a plan named for the lush native flora surrounding the Mt Laurel neighborhood. A spacious open floor plan accommodates families and their guests, with several seating options in the living room, kitchen, and dining areas. Neutral colors tie the three rooms together, with gray walls, soft taupe upholstery, and demure black-and-white window treatments. Contemporary furniture coincides with rustic pieces to create a clean, yet eclectic aesthetic. Nature-inspired décor and reclaimed wood accent walls subtly communicate the community’s emphasis on sustainability.
“My goal was to provide designs that potential buyers could replicate in their homes,” said Green. “And the comprehensive list of custom options offered here are some of the best I’ve seen in all the communities I’ve worked with.”
To complement the sleek stainless steel Kitchen Aid appliances that come standard in Mt Laurel homes, Green selected pristine granite countertops and a Kohler farmhouse sink and fixtures. A breakfast nook with a built-in bench offers homeowners the opportunity to socialize with friends and family when working in the kitchen.
Applied molding adds visual interest to ceilings and walls in the living room and in the home’s five bedrooms—one of which Green transformed into a front-room study with built-in bar. In the master bedroom, large windows overlook a heavily wooded backyard and accentuate the home’s elevation. An elegant chandelier overhangs a freestanding tub in the spa-like master bath, where gray-and-white herringbone tile trims the walls. A spacious downstairs guest bedroom includes its own bathroom and walk-in closet. And a separate powder bath provides a place for additional visitors to freshen up.
Upstairs, the multipurpose TV loft serves as a gathering space for children and parents to watch movies, complete homework, and play games. Green even imagined a spot for the family pet—a specially designed nook with plush dog bed.
When decorating a model home, Green considers the needs of a fictional—yet realistic—family, and their “story” informs her design. For the Cherry Laurel, she envisioned the upstairs as a haven for the family’s two children—a preteen boy and young girl. Spoonwood Mountain Lake—one of the neighborhood’s many amenities—was the inspiration for the boy’s outdoorsy bedroom, which features photographs and paintings of fishing and canoeing. Pinks, yellows, and florals adorn the girl’s room, where a desk/vanity sits within a recessed window. In addition to commodious cabinets and walk-in closets, the home offers large attic and basement storage spaces.
After months of planning this design, Green reminisced on her experience: “The best thing about Mt Laurel is the uniqueness of its homes,” said Green. “And the sophisticated tastes of the Birmingham community are undoubtedly reflected here.”
